About the Designers
Afra (1937–2011) and Tobia Scarpa (b. 1935) are a renowned Italian husband-and-wife duo of architects and designers. Both graduated in architecture from the IUAV University in Venice in 1957. Tobia, son of the legendary architect Carlo Scarpa, initially worked as a glass designer for Venini in Murano. The couple opened their studio in 1960 and became key figures in Italian design. They created iconic furniture and lighting for brands such as B&B Italia, Cassina, Flos, and Gavina. Their work is celebrated for its technical innovation, material sensitivity, and refined elegance that blends modernist clarity with organic warmth.
