About the designer
Carlo Nason (born 1935 in Murano, Italy) is a celebrated Italian designer and glassmaker whose innovative lighting fixtures embody the pinnacle of postwar Muranese creativity. Born into one of the island's oldest and most respected glassmaking families—his father, Vincenzo Nason, founded the renowned V. Nason & C.—Carlo grew up immersed in the furnace and the rhythmic mastery of the craft. He began engaging seriously with glass around age 20, apprenticing in his father's factory where he quickly absorbed the intricacies of structure, technique, and boldness. During the 1950s, his early works gained international recognition, with pieces entering the permanent collection of the Corning Museum of Glass in New York as part of the influential "Glass 1959" exhibition—attributed to the family firm but distinctly authored by the young designer.
By the 1970s, Carlo had discovered his true passion: designing lamps. His fruitful collaboration with Vetreria A.V. Mazzega (Mazzega Murano) granted him exceptional creative freedom, allowing him to experiment with an array of techniques—mouth-blown opaline glass, structured forms, layered translucency, and innovative fusions of glass with metal or wood.
Carlo Nason excels at creating pieces that feel both timeless and forward-looking—simple yet profoundly expressive. His iconic lamps remain highly sought after by collectors, though they rarely appear on the secondary market due to their enduring appeal and limited availability. A visionary who transformed Murano's ancient traditions into modernist masterpieces, Nason's work continues to illuminate interiors with sophisticated, poetic light.
