About the Manufacturer and Designer
Industria Legni Curvati traces its roots to the Ratti brothers of Monza in the curved plywood industry. Carlo Ratti (1890–1961), originally a sculptor and member of the Famiglia Artistica Monzese, worked together with his brother Mario, developing and refining innovative wood-bending techniques. In 1939, the brothers split. Carlo Ratti moved to Lissone and founded Industria Legni Curvati (often abbreviated as ILC), while Mario Ratti stayed in Monza and founded Società Compensati Curvi. Both branches collaborated with leading architects and designers such as Vico Magistretti, the Castiglioni brothers, Carlo De Carli, Joe Colombo, Tito Agnoli, and others. Their work with moulded plywood resulted in furniture that combined industrial production with aesthetics and helped establish Brianza as a global hub for this innovative material in 20th-century design.
